{{gap}}. . . The deaf and dumb child finds himself in a world of fearful stillness—one everlasting silence, through which comes no word to explain anything. 　

His is a living death, out of which the helpless baby soul cannot even cry, "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

{{gap}}Imagination reels in the effort to understand what that poor helpless child felt. Even the mind of Dante could not have imagined anything more horrible than her plight.

Let us hope that infancy robbed it or some of its horror for her. But we can imagine the little girl, waking to find herself in the dark, trying vainly to call to mother or father, and unable to hear herself, or to hear her agonised parents trying to soothe her and quieten her terrors. She could not even know that they were still with her.

{{gap}}その手は、彼女自身の手を取って彼女の腕の中に小さなお人形を置き、彼女の指でサインを作らせました。それは手話で「人形」という単語でした。 小さな女の子にはその行為は何の意味もありませんでした。

{{gap}}In her arms was placed a little doll, and the hand that placed it there took her Own hand and made a sign on the fingers. It was the word "doll" in the finger language. To the little girl it meant nothing. 　

Then the doll was taken away, only to be given back to her with the same sign. 　She felt it all over lovingly, and then something seemed to occur to her. She passed her hand over her own body, and smiled sadly. The doll was like herself.

けれども、彼女の全面的な熱心さにもかかわらず、それは小さな女の子の教師にとって長く、長く続く疲労を伴い、小さな少女にとっても、ゆっくりゆっくりした歩みの遅い旅でした。（*彼女の内部の陸地を取り囲む）湾はあまりにも広大で、（*陸地まで届けたい）メッセージはとても弱々しいものだったのです。 彼女は、糸に通すための小さな珠(ビーズ)をが彼女に渡されたあと、「beads（ビーズ）」という単語をが綴られました。彼女は「beads」と綴ってそれらを貰いました。

{{gap}}しかし、注留意しておくべきことは、彼女は並外れて賢かったとはいえ、彼女はまだ単なる赤ん坊にすぎなかったということです。そして、彼女が憶えなくてはならなかったそれらのい単語のひとつひとつはいずれも、アルファベットについてなんの知識も持っていない彼女にとっては無意味を持たない記号だったのです。

{{gap}}But it must be remembered she was only a baby, although an unusually bright one. And every one of those words was an arbitrary sign which she had to remember, for she had no idea of the alphabet.　　

{{gap}}彼女に人形、ビーズ、食べもの、飲み物、りんご、そして彼女が知っている全てのものをもたらすすべての信号は（彼女が知っていた事は彼女が触れたものだけだということを思い出して下さい）、神秘的で素晴らしく賢い両手が、毎日彼女が起きてからベッドに戻るまでの間、彼女に伝えたサインの組み合わせであることを、彼女は徐々に少しずつ理解しました。

{{gap}}Very gradually it came home to her that all these signals which would bring her a doll, beads, food, a drink, an apple, and all the things she knew (remember, she only knew of the things she had touched), were all combinations of these signs that the mysterious and wonderfully wise hands taught her every time she awoke and went to bed.

しかしそれは、重要な発見でした。発見した後には、時間をかけてそれはもうを応用と時間の問題になりましていけばよかったのです。彼女は人形（doll）と犬（dog）がどちらも同じ（do）というサインで始まることを知り、色々なものの始まりであるトップ（top）と花を入れるポット（pot）は、同じサイン、シグナルの順序を逆さにしただけだということを知りました。そのようにしながら彼女は、アルファベットとその素晴らしい使い方を学びました。

縦に並んだふたつの点は、アルファベットの二番目の字（B）でした。点は6個以上には増えませんでしたが、彼女が指で伝えることのできる全ての記号に対応する点記号があることを彼女は理解しました。

彼女のお気に入りのゲームは、オヤスミ用に整えられたおもちゃのベッドに他の子たちを押し込んで寝かしつける遊び振りをすることです。
